Cops catch Worcester Park car crooks because one is wearing stolen backpack

Two car criminals gave themselves away when one of them was arrested wearing a rucksack stolen from one of the three BMWs they had just broken into. Police also recovered a mobile phone belonging to the other thief after he had dropped it when hopping over garden fences to escape police.

They were both arrested after a police dog had joined the search and picked up their scent. They were found hiding amongst foliage in a back garden next to a shed in Longfellow Road, Worcester Park.

When Lucas O’Neil of Creston Way, Worcester Park, and James Watson of Tramway Path, Mitcham, appeared before Magistrates they were each sentenced to 12 weeks in prison after pleading guilty to three counts each of theft from motor vehicles in Worcester Park, in the early hours of Monday, 10 March 2014.

A local resident called police on 999 at 02:38hrs after he had seen two suspects trying to open door handles in Beaumont Drive before heading into Portland Close.

Officers arrived on scene and closed in when O’Neil and Watson activated a security light behind Sherbrooke Way. Officers found a BMW with its interior light on, its glove box open and the contents spread over the passenger seat.

O’Neil and Watson could then be heard by officers climbing over fence panels in gardens along Portland Close and Beaumont Drive. The Dog Unit called to the scene found O’Neil’s Blackberry mobile phone in one of the gardens.

The dog tracked them to Longfellow Road where O’Neil and Watson were arrested for theft from motor vehicle.

Police enquiries discovered another BMW had been broken into behind Sherbrooke Way and another BMW broken into on a driveway in Beaumont Drive. The glove boxes of both vehicles had been searched and their contents scattered inside the front of the cars.

Watson was wearing a rucksack when arrested. One victim found that his Nike rucksack which contained a white towel was missing. The rucksack that was in Watson’s possession contained a white towel.

Be wary of fake ‘crime prevention officers’

A warning from Sutton Police:

Police are asking residents to be wary of telephone callers or doorstep callers who say they are ‘crime prevention officers’ wanting to visit their homes and provide them with advice. This follows information we received from a local female resident, who took such a telephone call, and reported it to us on Friday, 28 February. The caller said they would be visiting her on the following day – Saturday, 1 March.

The caller suggested that they would be visiting residents in Brambledown Road, Wallington and Boundary Road, Wallington. The resident told us that she found this approach to be ‘strange’ and wanted us to be aware.

At 11:27hrs this morning (Monday, 3 March) we received another call – this time from a female resident in Grosvenor Avenue, Carshalton saying she had just received a telephone call offering crime prevention advice.

If you receive a telephone call like this please report it to Sutton Police station on 101. If you have a caller at your door offering crime prevention advice, don’t let them in, shut the door and call police on 999. We would rather come out to check that everything is OK, than to find that someone has become a victim of crime.

If you want crime prevention advice, please contact us. We are happy to come along and help you. You can get your local team’s number by calling Sutton Police station on 101 or visiting: www.met.police.uk/sutton and click on the link for Safer Neighbourhoods.

We would like to thank the residents for making us aware of these calls and these doorsteps visits.

Attempted burglary
– a number of males were arrested after a female resident in Wrayfield Road on Monday, 6 January received a number of knocks at her front door, which she didn’t answer because she didn’t recognise the callers. The knocks continued and began to sound like the callers were forcing their way inside. So the resident answered the door. Surprised to find anyone inside, the two male callers quickly ran off and got into a car parked outside. A vigilant neighbour managed to make a note of the registration of the vehicle, which turned out to be stolen. The vehicle was later picked up by Surrey Police on the M25. The driver and passengers in the car were arrested.
